Grace Lutheran College Dance Program
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
These levels may not effect female’s participation in dance, as it is seen as acceptable for females to dance. They are seen to have a sense of belonging when dancing, are not ridiculed or stereotyped and their self-esteem isn’t broken down as they are not labeled as weird because it is not normal for girls to dance. They do however, have other girls stereotyping them as unsuitable, too big or not good enough. Ultimately to improve participation in dance, these barriers need to be broken down so that high levels of participation in dance can be achieved. This is required by society as a whole and also by students and staff at Grace Lutheran College.
The more variety of people that participate in dance the less likely stereotypes will be placed on people. This would enable students to not feel self conscious about their body and the way they look. If these barriers were eliminated then a dance program at Grace Lutheran College would be successful but if these issues continued to be an issue there would be relatively low levels of success with the dance program.

Body Image & Self Concept
These barriers would most likely effect a female’s participation in dance. When looking at rock and roll dancing, there are lifts and moves that involve placing all the trust in the men. The woman needs to trust that the male will have the strength to allow them to hold them. It is hard to overcome weight issues and these can hold a person back when it comes to the required moves for rock n roll. To overcome these issues it would be helpful for the men to be reassuring and confident in their dance so as to put female at ease.
Body image and self-concept will affect the participation of dance at Grace Lutheran College however the program would be beneficial in helping the students be more confident in themselves and the people around them. If different varieties of people show up and are willing to participate in dance there is a high likelihood that the students of Grace Lutheran College can break down the barriers of body image and be proud of the way they look. It would be a good life lesson to learn that no matter what size or shape you are, there is a style of dance out there for everyone.

Media
Grace Lutheran College could split classes into male and female at first to help break down the awkwardness that may be felt by either sex. Levels could also be set up so that there are beginners, intermediate and advanced which would allow beginners to feel more relaxed during their classes. Episodes of So You Think You Can Dance could be played so that students can see that both genders and people with different body types participate.
The use of dance in the media would not affect female’s participation in dance but may affect the male’s participation in dance. It is becoming more ‘normal’ for males to participate in dance and will continue to be like this as shows such as Glee continue to break down the barriers of the way media portrays dance. In the survey that was conducted 50% of males and approximately 60% of females said that dance would be more fun as a group activity. By implementing a dance program at Grace Lutheran College it can make dance a group activity and more people would be willing to come along and join in. People will come with their friends and will be more confident as they are around people they know and trust. Although this is said, 75% of males that were surveyed, said that they would not participate in a dance program if it were introduced into Grace Lutheran College.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it has been evaluated that if a dance program was introduced into Grace Lutheran College it would be beneficial for the students and it would be successful in getting more students interested and involved in dance. By eliminating stereotypes, esteem issues, negative body image, and the way the media portrays dance the rate of participation could potentially increase. It would also be beneficial if it became a compulsory activity during school time as there would then be no excuse not to participate. Although there are a range of barriers found to potentially stop and prevent the participation in dance, these can be overcome.
